Blackwell Sailing and RYA Sailability

Imagine the thrill of sailing for people who can feel and hear but have no sight, or of sailing a boat at speed even though they can’t walk, or of joining in a sport where deafness doesn’t matter.

Sailing is one of the very few sports in which able-bodied sailors and disabled sailors can participate on equal terms. Blackwell Sailing became a recognised RYA Training Centre  in 2008 but has been an RYA Sailability Foundation Site since 2000. We were visited in 2010 by Sailability’s Patron HRH The Princess Royal, who officially opened our new building. Currently there are more than 20,000 disabled sailors in the UK helped by around 12,000 volunteers at over 150 recognised RYA Sailability sites.

Blackwell Sailing’s team of dedicated volunteers mean that sailors with disabilities are able to experience the same exhilaration, enjoyment and confidence felt by able-bodied sailors.
